A lot of my fellow gaming females have been touching a subject that has been bothering me for quite some time. When and why did the gaming world become so negative and not centered so much around just having fun anymore? Why do people insist on cursing, using racial slurs, and just insulting people.
I have talked to some friends outside our “gaming world” about this. (We will call them “outsiders”.) These outsiders actually look at our world in a very negative way, and can never see themselves being a part of it. It’s no wonder our hobby is blamed for violence in schools and with guns, even though there has to be a lot more going on then just pwning people in games to cause that, but outsiders don’t see that! All they see is the people using foul language and the violence that is in our games. So they just put 2+2 together.
I myself try to avoid using bad language. People who play with me can tell you that I rarely ever do any of these things. I am just here to play the games and have fun with people! But there are these few people who stand out more then the people like myself.
You know you hear them over Vent, XBL and as “trolls” on the internet. They are the ones insulting you, calling you rude names, and in my case making fun of me because I am a female gamer. (I already covered some of that subject.) But if I try to stand up and say their behavior is inappropriate and annoying, I am the one getting laughed at and ridiculed! Come on people, grow a pair! Why am I the one getting the crap when this guy is acting like a complete moron. Are you scared of him or something?
Here is a prime example of what I am talking about. This is reality, as sad as it is. He really needs to step away from the controller.
(Warning NSFW as loud profanity and crude terms are used.)
These people must have some pretty low self-esteem if it is making them feel better by trying to belittle others in a video game. But the people joining in and laughing at the people like me trying to call them out just adds to it. I am beginning to think this is beyond repair, and it will always be like this. But why does it have to be?! I know there are many of you out there who have kept quiet this whole time, and just dealt with it in the ways I have… by not doing anything! Which isn’t going to help solve anything now is it?
Honestly the way things are right now, if I had children who wanted to play online video games, I probably wouldn’t want to them to just because of the people I see on here. I honestly could care less what these people say to me, but if my young child heard stuff like what is said over vent/XBL, I think it could honestly hurt them.
Why does something that can be so much fun, have to be so negative and crude? I mean the regular trash talk “Ohh you just got pwned/worked/stomped on” is fine, but do these people have to constantly say the “F” word, drop “N bombs” and yell into their mic?
Come on gamers, stand up for what you believe is fun, and against these people constantly trying to tear you down. With enough of us, we can defeat all this hatred for a brighter gaming future.

Comment by jjgiant March 2, 2008 @ 9:52 pmI agree with ya Girl. Just recently i had gotten into a fight with someone in WoW. I had voiced my opinion on something and he said that “That is better then your guild and you mom” i mean common. Was that nessecary. Then when he found out i was a 30 year old women playing WoW he called me a C**t. Im sure all women know what that is. But THAT had made me mad. I was going to report him but i figured what is the point. I dont report people. Like you said. Its a game that people look at as a hobby and enjoy playing. I just learn to ignore them and move on. Keep in Touch Girl. You need to talk let me know
Comment by Kittydoom March 2, 2008 @ 10:29 pmWow. That word says it all. Just… wow. I have gotten mad at dying and crap but c’mon… it is still just a game. I can’t stand players that act like that. It is really sad at how many people have an {M} next to their names on my Vent. Guess that’s it…
Comment by Josh March 2, 2008 @ 11:12 pmHe sure showed that TV who was boss though.
Comment by Josh March 2, 2008 @ 11:14 pmi agree with you 110% there. and you know my feelings towards the whole thing too
Comment by Binh aka Church March 3, 2008 @ 1:00 amI’m not sure, the negativity I see is just venting frustration. I’ve been called everything in the book, but in the end, it was all in good fun. No one really takes it seriously and if you do, you have problems.
Comment by Jeremiah March 3, 2008 @ 3:45 amExactly. The Real problem is, people refer it by video “games”, so the 1st thing that comes to their mind is 8 year olds. But, video games are actually the evolution of movies. You dont get surprised when a 18+ is watching a TV, do you.
Comment by Adnan Ahmed March 3, 2008 @ 7:36 amI’m not a gamer. But my guess is because gaming is now more common, you are getting more and more non-traditional gamer types involved.
Every internet bb or chat group is full of idiots like that. I’ve quit a few because of them.
Comment by madmonq March 3, 2008 @ 12:56 pmI think this is part of the reason I’m a little intimidated to get fully into gaming—not only am I female, but I’m also new and unskilled, which makes matters more stressful.
Comment by Comrade GoGo March 3, 2008 @ 2:34 pm@Comrade: Yes, that’s always a stressful situation to be in, especially if you’re not fully aware of how certain parts of the game work. It also sets you up for ridicule from the other players. Just keep your head in the game, and learn as much about the game play as possible.
For instance, I’ve been playing Quake 3/4 and RTCW for years, but I just picked up Counter Strike: Source a couple of months ago. At first I was that “n00b” everyone hated to have on their team, but I just kept my eyes and ears open for the first few days of game play, and now I’m one of the better players on the servers I frequent.
Comment by Jeremiah March 3, 2008 @ 3:44 pmYou’ve got to be kidding me. Epic fail for a stellar performance of misunderstanding the way males relate to each other. Video games will always be an outlet cursing, grunting, competition, and vented frustration. It’s just like a typical bar fight, except here nobody even gets hurt. What you’re doing is like pushing yourself in the middle of a fight and whining about it when a stray punch knocks you square in the jaw. If you don’t like it, enter the bar but don’t join the fight. If you don’t like trash talk, play the game and mute your mic. It isn’t everyone else’s job to conform to your style.
And -10 points on the “female gamer” diatribe. Guys play games and no one cares. Girls play games and no one cares. Girls play games and talk about how they’re girls playing games and the world rolls their collective pair of eyes. Girls play games and whine about how the male-dominated gaming community conducts itself the way men in the world do–with relentless badgering and flaring egos. And people like me respond like this.
Comment by Tain March 3, 2008 @ 6:46 pmI wasn’t “whining” about not liking the trash talk, I mean… I do join in and it is still part of the game and fun.
I am talking about the people out there who make it their entire goal just to put the other people down… and there are a lot of them.
The ones who cuss after every word, and use very crude terms and say racial comments. Trash talking is fun to a limit until someone starts calling you a smelly cu*t or something.
Also, the female gamers thing…
Like I clearly stated in the thing,”Girls just want to be treated and looked at like everyone else.”
You can talk on your mic in XBL, and on vent, and no one bothers or thinks twice. If I do I am constantly being badgered about being “hawt” and “omgz girls don’t play games” and many other things. It’s never ending, and you could see why it would be frustrating.
The gaming world isn’t all male-dominated so much anymore. Plus it’s also kids on there, parents, grandparents, people of other cultures (who are probably offended by some racial comments made.) and 38% of gamers is female.
People should respect all types of people who play, because it isn’t just about the crazy frat-boy’s who play, and it actually never really has been.
